Knight Models Construction Set 1 – Batman Miniatures Game

Thanks for looking at my website, This post is a short review about the Knight Models Construction Set 1 for the Batman Miniatures Game. The set is comprised of a pallet branded with the Wayne Enterprises Logo, two barriers & two waste Skips, one branded Wayne Enterprises, the other Queen Industries.

First thing to say is that all these parts are laser cut MDF (with machines from LaserLevelAdvisor.com), In some of the Knight Models MDF terrain sets there have been complaints that the laser cut hasn’t went all the way though, which has made things almost impossible to get the pieces out and build the model without damaging it. This set isn’t like that at all, by the time I got this set home most of the parts had already worked themselves free in the bag it’s that well cut. This is however a slight issue with the pallet! It took longer to piece the pallet back together to find out which of the slats went where than it did to glue everything else together! (maybe a slight exaggeration! But it was frustrating!)
So be warned, if you get this set, and can keep the pallet slats together in order before you assemble it, do so! otherwise you’ll be in for a very frustrating few minutes!!

As you can see below, there aren’t a whole lot of pieces to this kit, so it won’t take you long to assemble at all (I’ve piled duplicate pieces on top of each other here)

The kit gives enough pieces to make:

• x2 Barriers
• x 1 Wayne Enterprises Skip
• x1 Queen Industries Skip
• x1 Wayne Enterprises Pallet

The laser etching on the pallet and the wayne skip is really good and quite defined, even after I paint these you’ll still be able to clearly make out the etching, the same can’t be said about the Queen one though. The actual word “Queen” is pretty deeply cut, but the word “industries” is bearly visable at all, I don’t see this lasting the undercoat, let alone a top coat. Otherwise the cutting is spot on on these pieces, the barrier still feels quite sturdy even though its very thin too.

In the below image you can see all the parts assembled, this took no time at all, the pack came with some very comprehensive instructions, but to be honest, I didn’t need them, they were very simple to work out how to put together, the whole set only took about 20 minutes to assemble. For a beginner modeler though, the instructions will be very handy.
The skips are brilliant, I love them! It’s nice to see some scatter terrain that isn’t just boxes, I think these will feature on every board I play on anywhere I can justify putting them on the table! Even if it’s not Batman! They’re a nice size, with some great detail, I’m also thinking about converting one of my mantic trucks (from the Mars Attacks game)  into a skip wagon just to put it on the back!
The pallet on the otherhand, although very well designed, and looks fantastic, doesn’t really quite suit the scale in my opinion. I see pallets all the time due to my job and they are usually about 1/3 the size of this one! I know pallets will come in all different shapes and sizes, but the average one probably isn’t this big. Maybe it is in Spain where these were designed, but in the UK the average one should be much much smaller. I recently purchased a set from an ebay seller that contained about 20 pallets and 40 packing crates (for around £20) which are a much better scale. They’re also a bit more useful, as with 1, it just looks odd. With 20, I can put little stacks of them about where ever I like. Having just one doesn’t really look right. It’ll probably end up being placed so it’s leaning against a wall, which will look great, and give some nice cover for some mook to hide behind, but that’s about it.
The barriers are great, but again, only having two means they aren’t all that useful. I would really like 10 of these in a set but with only 2, they might look slightly out of place. Especially if I wanted any more of them, as I’d have to buy this set again, which would give me another two skips. I do love the skips, but I think 2 is ample for your average sized game. 4 might be pushing it, and even then, I’ll still only have 4 barriers.
They’re still useable, and I will use them. But like I said, 10 would be a much better number. Hopefully in the future knight Models will release a set with just the barriers, or barriers and pallets, so I can get a few more to make a stack of pallets and a nice run of barriers.

I thought the skips looked a little empty when they were finished so I decided to fill them up! I’m not sure what the stuff actually is that I used to fill them, my dad spotted it where he works and thought I might be able to use it in one of my modeling projects, It’s been sitting in a cupboard for about 5 years but it’s finally been used! You could use model railway ballast, cut up sprues or fish tank gravel to acheive the same effect though, I was just going for a skip full of rubble look and I’m really pleased with how they turned out as you can see in the image below!

I also made some bin bags to go next to the skips, they’re a little on the large side, but I thought they still look pretty good. I’ll probably make a few more of these and stick 2-3 on a base so they can be scattered around easily.

I’ll make another post when these have been painted up, and in that one I’ll also put some mini’s in the photos for scale, and show the other set of pallets I got for scale.

Overall, I do love this set, it was cheap, the skips (which is the main reason to buy it) look fantastic, the barriers look great, will be useful, but it would be nice to have a few more. I’m not convinced on the pallet, just because of the size. The design of it is superb, it looks great, just not at this scale.
