Epic 40k Warlord Titan

Over the course of every hobbyist’s “career”, there’ll be certain miniatures, games or images that mean more to them than most.
For me there are a few things that have real nostalgic meaning to me, the box cover for Mordheim for example is one of my favourite images games workshop has produced, Mordheim is also one of my favourite games (Bloodbowl being the top game).

I recently rediscovered this image when going through a booklet that I found in my epic 40k starter set box which is just fantastic.

Space Marine – 90’s era

I’ve been a lover of the warhammer & 40k universes since I was around 10 years old. Introduced by friends (Liam Veitch & Steven Brown) while on a camping trip with scouts (1st Bedlington, the Pioneers!), after a long discussion we concluded I should start a space wolves army, something I did a couple of years later.
I was hooked right from the beginning, the depth of the stories in the codexes always leaving me wanting more. When I started out, 2nd edition 40k was in full swing. The year 3rd Edition 40k came out, my dad took me to Warhammer world & Games day. I had the best weekend ever, but he must have had the dullest time as he wasn’t interested in the slightest. I remember to celebrate the release of Dark Eldar (who featured in the 3rd Ed starter set) they brought an injection moulding machine to Games day, and were giving away freshly made sprues. My dad spent most of the day joining the que and getting more and more sprues. He was more interested in the machine than anything else but as a bye product I came home with a bag full of free minis. Look at me getting all nostalgic! That’s what mini’s like this one do to me. Wargaming has played such an important part of my life that it brings out all the best memories!

I fell out of love with the game Warhammer 40k a long time ago, but never the lore. I’ve always loved the “fluff” and continued to read as often as I can the Horus Heresy novels as well as others, and games like Inquisitor & Necromunda which feature in the same universe have still stayed close to my gaming/painting tables.

So, Epic Warlord Titan

If you asked me what one thing “means” 40k to me though, it wouldn’t be a space marine, or an imperial guard Leman Russ tank that spring to mind. Nor the Emperor on his golden Throne & his sons the Primarchs. The one image that sticks in my mind is of a warlord titan.

I’ve always loved the art for the warlord titans, and loved the figure even more.

Warhammer Monthly Warlord Titan Covers

One of my other hobbies has always been comic collecting, even before wargaming I was an avid comic reader. So when in early 1998 GW started releasing Warhammer Monthly, their new comic. I was all over it.
Two of my favourite covers are pictured above, they even ran a competition to win a warlord titan model! Needless to say, I didn’t win it… A fact that still upsets me to this day…
The Warlord titan has always been both an iconic image in my eyes, but also one of those elusive miniatures that never made it into my collection.
For the past couple of years I’ve spent more of my hobby budget sourcing older out of print (OOP) figures than spending on new minis.
Recently I managed to pick up an epic warlord at a very reasonable price. I was delighted to see that it was even in it’s box when it arrived! Although not the older box I would have seen on the shelves of GW when I was a child, still boxed is nice!

As well as being a coveted childhood dream to own, it’s also the first mini in months that I’ve actually built (due to the birth of my son), so for the first time in what feels like forever, I not only got to paint, but also build!

Laying out the parts I was really pleased to find they were all there. I’ve sometimes had ebay “bargains” which turn out not to be such a bargain as some vital components are missing. Not the case here, it’s complete!

This is exactly what I was wanting! I love everything about this mini, from the pose to the size & it’s design. Everything about it is great!

I started painting the warlord titan by airbrushing a black undercoat with my Badger 150 airbrush. I used Vallejo black primer for this.

The next step was to airbrush Vallejo Model Colour 968 – Flat green

After that I gave everything a heavy wash with Athonian Camoshade.

The next stage was to pick out the metal sections which i did with Vallejo German grey (rather than a metallic colour I prefer a dark grey)

Next it was time to highlight the green with Vallejo Bright camo green, the shade lighter than flat green.

Once this stage was complete I went round the figure and picked out a few bits and pieces like panels and cables and painted them with yellow or red. Some panels were painted yellow with black stripes.
